Industrial Psychology is the study of applying psychological principles and the study of human behavior to come up with solutions for issues within the workplace. Industrial psychology has a direct impact on employee morale and workplace productivity through the observation of training programs and working to create them, as well as using data and research to help human resource teams in the development of successful hiring programs.

Psychology is an academic practice which aims to achieve the goal of comprehending the behavior and mental functions of humans. They use Biological, psychological, and sociocultural influences to make predictions on human behavior. In the early 1900’s, As America began to industrialize and expand economically, the study of applying psychology in the business setting began. Hugo Munsterburg, an American-German psychologist pioneered the use of psychology in industry throughout his career as a Harvard Professor. First published in 1910, Munsterburg’s book “Psychology and Industrial Efficiency” is considered the first book on I/O psychology. His book focuses on Identifying workers who are mentally fit to complete the task and the creation of an employee environment that maximises productivity. Another important contributor is Walter Bingham, who had a wide impact on the field of I/O Psychology. He created the Division of Applied Psychology, which was the first academic program in Industrial Psychology. (Kazi, 2012) He also had a huge hand in bringing credibility and awareness to the field. He enacted himself as the “spokesperson” for Industrial Psychology and worked to expand it by writing articles for magazines and newspapers.

In order for a business to operate efficiently, It is necessary to have high employee morale and a functioning organizational system so that conflict in the workplace can be quickly resolved. It is the Industrial Psychologists who work to create the plans that allow this efficiency. “They collaborate with management to help plan policies, carry out screenings and training sessions, and develop a plan for the future.” (AllPsychologySchools, 2018) There are many different Strategies and concepts that I/O Psychologists use to determine job performance. Many I-O Psychologists use the “workplace arrogance scale”, which is a concept that was created by Stanley Silverman and is utilized to determine if a manager has arrogant tendencies. Another important Psychological concept used is “collective intelligence”, created by Anita Woolley, which demonstrates that teams possess a certain level of compatibility and intelligence.

While Psychology is a very popular major, It is not for everyone. To be successful in a strenuous and stressful job, it is necessary to have great teamwork and communication skills. A majority of an Industrial Psychologists time is spent working and talking with others to create plans to optimize success in the workplace. I/O Psychologists need to have a high stress tolerance, due to tension in the workplace from dealing with employee interactions. To achieve a career in industrial psychology, it is necessary to receive a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Some of the courses in psychology include Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, and Assessment and Testing. In the introduction to Psychology class, students learn basic attributes of psychology, such as behavioral deviation, scientific investigation, and human development. Research methods is a class where students learn various research techniques, as well as the conduction of surveys and case studies. followed by a masters degree in industrial psychology. In Assessment and Testing, students will learn about psychometric techniques, which is the psychological measurement of knowledge and personality traits Although a master’s degree is not necessary, many find that job opportunities are limited without a graduate degree. Obtaining a Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology allows one to work in a research position. Many go on to attain a PhD or a PsyD. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program places more emphasis on general research while a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program is a professional degree that allows you to use your psychological knowledge in clinical practice. Top schools for I-O Psychology are Michigan State, Pennsylvania State, and University of Minnesota.

The salary of a psychologist can vary depending on where you live and the size of the company or the organization you work for. According to the U.S. Bureau of labor, the median national annual salary for an I-O psychologist is $82,760. The top cities for industrial psychology includes Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C Metro area, Research triangle park, Michigan, and New York City. Top companies who hire Industrial Psychologists include Amazon, American Institute of research, American Red Cross, FedEx, and even Walmart. (LinkedIn, 2018) The states with the highest employment level are Virginia with an annual mean wage of $123,640 and 240 employed. Massachusetts has 120 employed with an annual mean wage of $75,000. New Jersey only has 40 employed industrial psychologist with the annual mean wage being $107,950

Industrial- Organizational Psychology is a quickly growing field, so much so that It earned a spot on The Wall Street Journal’s “Hot Jobs of 2018”. “Psychologists will be in demand, but growth will be fastest in industrial and organizational psychology” (Shellenbarger, 2018. According to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, “Industrial-organizational psychologists will enjoy a 26% growth in employment through 2018” (1).

Some of the benefits of being an industrial psychologist include the ability to work directly with employees on important problem solving skills , as well as the satisfaction of being able to help both companies and employees be as successful as possible “Organizational psychology offers many techniques for team building. From icebreakers to bonding experiences, you can benefit from activities that help your employees see themselves as part of a group working toward a common goal” (Johnston,2016) The downsides of being an industrial psychologist include extensive education and training, evening and weekend hours, and emotional strains. Since the education time for an I/O Psychologist is 6-10 years, it can be mentally and financially stressful to obtain the degrees and finish the courses required.

Industrial psychology is the career for me because I’m exceedingly candid when I need to be, and I pride myself on my communication skills. I feel I would enjoy this career because I/O Psychology would give me the opportunity to work in a job where I can solve unique problems and encounter different situations in the workplace everyday, instead of working a monotonous and repetitive office job. I feel that I am excellent in team building activities and group work, and I can motivate others so that as a result, they can perform better in the workplace.
