How to Save Modern Democracy Essay Example

Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), the president of the United States during the Great Depression played a huge role in putting back a lot of people back to employment with his Work Progress Administration policy. During the time of depression, he delivered a speech on the Four Freedoms. The Four Freedoms he mentioned in his speech is freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship God of in one’s own way, freedom from want and freedom for fear. The freedom of want is one of them that FDR proclaimed before the second world war when the Nazis were taking over Europe and imposed a threat to conquer the world.

FDR believed that the four freedoms will help the world to save modern democracy. Many citizens call for immediate improvement who relate to the social economy. In my view, every citizen should have a right to be free of want in today’s world to maintain peace and democracy around the world. When FDR claims freedom of want he meant a secure life for every citizen of the country. As an individual, I absolutely agree with the statement made by FDR. There are a lot of things that should be guaranteed to support the poor and the middle class, for example, emergency health services, free or cheap education for poor families. As FDR mentioned there should be some way to cover more old age pensions and unemployment insurances. These insurances would help the poor to meet their daily needs if they are unemployed but at the same time, there should be a policy which could help them to get jobs.

Considering the old aged, the government should ensure that they get health and transportation needs at their own comfort. The children should be able to get a good education no matter who they are and where they belong. Keeping in mind all the problems in the modern democracy some of the basic needs that should be available to all the citizens are education, health, and equal opportunities for all. The policies or basic needs should be made but the most important thing is that to make sure that they are brought into action with the approval of the people. Everyone knows that this services cost money however this problem could be solved using what we call taxes. The government should increase the taxes for the people who are rich, and wealthy which can be then used to help the poor. This would not only maintain democracy but also reduce the riots in various parts of the world and maintain peace. To explain this in a better way would be to take some action against corruption at the higher level of the government and bring in some kind of policy into work that could help to minimize the corruption and then only we would be able to have good democracy.
