Dietary Supplements Essay Example
Firstly, week fifteen’s discussion was about finding an original research article that focused on seniors utilizing varying types of supplements. These various types of supplements consist of prebiotics, probiotics, botanical (herbal products) or a specific nutrient enhancement. Each discussion member was expected to articulate the research article’s primary key findings, summary and how the information is relevant to the individual’s place of employment or their immediate family members.
In addition, the first discussion members research article analyzed the validity for supplemental usage, brands of dietary enhancement and if there is any correlation amongst population background, way of life habits and medical conditioning. The research surmised that seniors use supplements more frequently in contrast to other age groups. There is a lingering concern for older individuals and the over consumption of dietary pills. There were a higher percentage of females that utilized dietary supplements in contrast to men. The most frequently consumed supplements had been multivitamin or mineral supplements, Vitamin D pills, Omega three fish oil and B-complex or B vitamins. Henceforth, people had a greater likelihood of utilizing supplements if they stemmed from a more affluent socio-economic status, obtained private medical coverage, earned a higher level of education, individuals that do not partake in smoking, are physically fit and currently in proficient medical health. The majority of individuals that consumed dietary supplements had not sought the counsel of their primary physician before engaging in this habit. The most common reason for consuming a dietary supplement was to improve their health, increase bone density, and compliment the individual’s diet and to enhance the condition of a participant’s heart. One of the discussion members recollected from reading the prior literature that doctors and pharmacists ought to be informed by their client if they are consuming dietary supplements. Therefore by the individuals informing their primary physician and pharmacists they can promptly collaborate with the senior individual to prevent any form of adverse interaction that might occur from simultaneously consuming prescription drugs and dietary pills. One discussion member reiterated that they would recommend for the senior individual to visit their primary physician to determine if the participant requires dietary supplements to enhance their current health condition. Finally, the discussion member relayed that dietary supplements should be more closely monitored and regulated by the Federal Drug Administration to protect the safety and well-being of seniors.
Henceforth, the second discussion group member had a research article that discussed Ginkgo Bilbao supplements and cognitive insufficiencies. The information had originated from a community focused population investigation that was facilitated in the country of France and is known as Paquid. The study had been constituted as one of the longest occurring analyses on a reduced mental capability and the prevalence of dementia. Additionally, the researchers documented a decreased score on the MMSE, reduction in communication proficiency and recollection of active memory. The individuals who facilitated the study perceived that the decrease on the MMSE was mitigated in participants that utilized Ginkgo Bilbao extract in comparison to people that did not engage in the consumption of dietary pills. Participants that took Piracetam demonstrated a rapidly occurring decline on the MMSE in contrast to the control cohort. The researchers hypothesized that there could be a concise drug influence pertaining to the consumption of Ginkgo Bilbao on reducing cognitive deficiencies in a senior population that does not display dementia related behavior. In addition, the discussion member works with individuals who stem from a lower socio-economic status and have completed less education and did not consume dietary supplements. One of the discussion members was intrigued that the cohort taking Piracetam displayed a rapid decline in their mental ability as opposed to the control group. It is difficult to formulate a consensus regarding if a dietary supplement is effective from a single study instead the individual should use conclusive findings from multiple research inquiries to validate the product claims. There was another discussion member which stated that she perceived that individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s are affected differently as the progression of the disease can vary according to each documented case. The prospect of an individual developing dementia or Alzheimer’s may depend on factors such as: existing family history of the disease, the person’s age, existing illnesses and their social environment. Additionally a group member found a quote which stated that: “Ginkgo Biloba extract is used in Europe and North America to treat dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Most commercially available preparations are standardized to two active ingredients: flavone glycosides and terpenoids. The flavonoid constituent is a strong antioxidant and is believed to have a general neuroprotective benefit” (Psychology Today, 2017). On the other hand, a group member reiterated that she located information which stated that Ginkgo Biloba has not consistently proven to be a reliable product for mitigating the progression of mental decline. There is also the possibility of adverse medical side effects if Ginkgo Biloba is simultaneously consumed with other drugs. Participants who are interested in starting a dietary supplement should consult first with their primary physician, dietician, family members and close friends. Finally an individual’s socio-economic status and current level of education may dictate their usage of dietary supplements and whether they can afford to purchase this pertaining item.
On the other hand, the third discussion member found a research article which discussed the correlation amongst fish oil supplements, brain mass and mental capacity sustainability. The participants partook in mental evaluations such as the MMSE and the Alzheimer’s disease estimation measurement), MRI’s and a supplemental analysis which lasted for approximately two to four years. Additionally, the cohort that did not have APOE carriers demonstrated by the consumption of fish oil that their hippocampus and cerebral cortex grey substance density had dramatically increased. The median mental cohort also displayed a larger hippocampus and cerebral cortex gray substance density after consuming fish oil supplements. The supplement of Omega three fish oil is effective in protecting against the beginning stages of mental deficiencies, Alzheimer’s disease and median levels of intellectual activity. The researchers recommended after completion of this pertaining study that individuals consume fish oil supplements during earlier points in the life course which could hopefully combat the repercussions of age associated mental deterioration. This discussion member would adamantly advocate for close friends, family members and coworkers consume fish oil supplements which may assist with maintaining brain density mass and enhancing one’s level of mental proficiency. There was another discussion member who articulated that one of the required class readings reiterated that Omega three fish oil had been the most widely utilized products to benefit one’s health and well-being. There was another discussion member who relayed that the clientele, she works with frequently consume fish oil and this pertaining substance is used by individuals that display coronary heart disease. One discussion member articulated that frequent consumption of fish which are full of omega three fatty acids has been proven to reduce the prospect of mental deficiency and dementia in seniors that are physically fit. There have been studies conducted which surmised that the consumption of omega three fish oil supplements is not efficient in alleviating mental decline for physically active seniors. Finally, the discussion member concluded that consuming fish is more effective in combating against mental decline in contrast to Omega three fish supplements.
Additionally, the fourth discussion member located an online journal article which mentioned that yogurt supplemented with probiotics may assist middle aged and older individuals against possibly contracting an upper respiratory illness. The intercession groups were fed three hundred Ml/D of yogurt called Lactobacilli’s (N11115) and the other cohort had not been administered a probiotic. In comparison, to the control cohort the amount of participants, which developed upper respiratory illnesses and the occurrences of this pertaining infection were dramatically reduced in the intercession sample. The probability of an upper respiratory illness in the intercession group had been documented as 55% of the susceptibility that the control cohort displayed. The findings from the research imply that yogurt, which is supplemented with beneficial forms of probiotic bacteria can diminish the prospect of seniors contracting an upper respiratory track illness and their T-cell proficiency level may be enhanced. Therefore, the discussion member’s parents regularly consumed Activia yogurt to assist with improving digestive functioning and enhancing their immune system against varying illnesses such as respiratory infections. There were multiple discussion members that consumed probiotics and varying forms of dietary supplements. One member relayed her concern regarding the issue of seniors utilizing holistic and alternative forms of medication without consulting their primary physician. The holistic or alternative forms of medication could negatively counteract the prescription drugs that the senior individual is currently consuming thus culminating in a serious or life threatening reaction. There was a discussion member who articulated a relevant quote: “Probiotics are powders, liquids or pills made up of live bacteria thought to help maintain the body’s natural balance of gut microorganisms. In addition, Probiotics can be classified as dietary supplements; they don’t have to be held to the same regulatory standards as prescribed or even over the counter drugs. Manufactures don’t have to secure Food and Drug Administration Approval to sell their products and their facilities aren’t policed the same way as pharmaceutical companies” (Interlandi, 2016). There were multiple members which concurred that dietary supplements should be held to the same standard as prescribed and generic medication. Henceforth another member articulated a pertinent topic which mentioned: “be aware that an herbal supplement may contain dozens of compounds and that all of its ingredients may not be known. Researchers are studying many of these products in an effort to identify what other ingredients may be active and understanding their effects on the body. This also coincides with the possibility that what’s on the label may not be in the container” (National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health, 2018). There was a group member which articulated that complaints had been filed against Activia yogurt. Since this brand of yogurt has not demonstrated sufficient research to corroborate the companies claims that consuming their product would help regulate an individual’s digestive health. Additionally, Activia has done a sufficient job of advertising their product but they should release to the public their research findings pertaining to healthy digestive functioning after consuming their product.
In closing dietary supplements and other forms of alternative medicine may offer benefits to individuals that consume this pertaining substance. There should be further research conducted to validate the legitimacy of dietary supplements and their overall effectiveness. Furthermore, dietary supplements should be complimenting a healthy and nutritious diet for individuals, but only after consulting their primary physician regarding the frequent utilization of this product.
