Support I Receive From My Family Essay Example
In every single Marvel comic strip, there is a hero that will save the world. This hero has a power they use to aid themselves, a weakness they overcome, and many supporters. Since starting at the University of Cincinnati, I have noticed that I am just like those heroes in the marvel comic strips. Even though I tend to get overwhelmed pretty quickly, with my power of positive thinking and my parents as my number one supporters, I am certain I am going to make it out of the battle known as college, unscathed.
I work 30 hours a week, I am taking 5 credit hours worth of classes, I have homework, friends and family to spend time with, and etc. All my responsibilities keep adding up, and after summer it only got more and more intense. When I get overwhelmed, which happens often, I tend to get nothing done. Its like I mentally shut down and all I want to do is lay in bed and watch ‘Friends’ on Netflix. My Junior year of high school, the year that most know to be the most important and stressful year, this happened to me. I had friend drama going on, worked all the time and the homework just kept stacking up. Instead of being productive and pushing myself to get it all done and get through it, I laid in bed and tried not to think about any of it. That year, for the first time ever, I failed a class I had always been good at; English.
Despite my weakness, though, I have the super power of positive thinking, that I have only recently acquired two years ago. Two years ago I started my first job at Plato's Closet, a retail store. There, from my manager, I have learned that the only way to get through a shift without screaming or walking out is by picturing a happy, positive end result. After discovering that thinking positively helps improve your performance and mood, I now use it in my everyday life. As my homework adds up, instead of thinking about how much I have to do, I think about the impact I will have on the kids I will be teaching after I get my degree. My power is going to help me get through college because it is going to be hard for me to get overwhelmed from all I have to do, when all I can think about is the end result, and how happy I will be when I get there.
The support I have from my family is also going to help me get through these next four years at The University of Cincinnati. My mom is always on me to stay caught up with my school work and is always encouraging me to do better than the best. My dad is always there as an ear to listen when my weakness gets in the way, and a shoulder to cry on when my weakness wins. One example would be when my mom knew I had a lot to do for my teaching class my senior year. I had two research papers due the next day and I had only started one of them. She took my phone and encouraged me relentlessly to get it done as fast as I could, so I could get to bed at a decent hour. Because of her, I got a perfect score on both those papers, and a good night's rest. Without my parents, I would not be where I am now and I would not have any plans to go any further.
In the end, like any other story involving a superhero, good will defeat evil. My weakness of getting overwhelmed easily does not compare to the support I have from my family, and my super power of positive thinking. I will make it out of the University of Cincinnati alive.
