Did you know September 11, 2001, was the deadliest day in history for New York City firefighters? 343 firefighters total were killed. 9/11 was a very special date in U.S. History. This is the date where several airplanes crashed into the twin towers in New York. These terrorist acts were committed by the group al-Qaeda. More than 400 police officers and firefighters were killed total. These attacks not only shocked America but proved how low of security we were and how that needed to change.

The attacks of 9/11 were a series of airline hijackings and suicides committed by 19 different groups associated with the Islamic group al-Qaeda. The first 2 planes hut the world trade center (Twin Towers), the third plane hit the pentagon, and the fourth pane crashed in an open field in Pennsylvania. After only 15 minutes of the terrorists striking the center of the World Trade Center, it collapsed into a huge cloud of dust and smoke. It was a huge disaster. It took up to 8 months after the crash to clean it up.

These attacks were led by Osama bin Laden, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and Mohammed Atef. These leaders were part of the Islamic group Al-Qaeda, which has been a part of several major terrorist attacks, such as the USS Cole attack, and the Dar es Salaam. The group Al-Qaeda began as a network to support thee Muslims who were fighting against the Soviet Union during the Afghan war. This group is mostly populated with Islamic people and Afghanistan people. On May 2, 2011, Bin Laden was killed by U.S. Military forces. The forces located him by receding compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This group is designated as a terrorist organization by Canada, China, France, Iran, Japan, United Kingdom, Russia, U.S., and the United Arab Emirates.

The attacks of 9/11 were set up by having terrorists hi-jack commercial airplanes and then crashing them into buildings, such as the pentagon or the Twin Towers, on purpose for their religious extremist group. They went into the plane, killed the pilots and maybe the staff, and then took over control of the airplane. The airplane fights that were hacked that planned on hitting the twin towers were going from Boston to Los Angeles. The flight traveling from Dulles, Virginia to Los Angeles hit the Pentagon in Washington. Finally, the last plane traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The first 2 planes were piloted by hijackers Marwan al Shehhi and Mohammed Atta. The third plane that hit the Pentagon was piloted by Hani Hanjour. The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was piloted by hijacker Ziad Jarrah. Vice president Cheyney had ordered United 93 to be shot down.

Osama Bin Laden enjoyed his obsession of the September 11th attacks. He calls it the Manhattan raid. He liked doing it so much that he was planning several other attacks for the anniversaries of 9/11, one of them having up explosives in up to 10 different planes and going to destroy them.

September 11th, 20001 wasn’t the only terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. The first one was a bombing in February of 1993 which killed six people. Ever since both attacks on the Twin towers happened, the survivors usually face post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is where you have flashbacks to super scary moments like this and you can only think about that. Yu start to almost go insane. Some other common problems were respiratory problems, asthma, and lung problems.

The United States had many attempts to kill Osama Bin Laden before 9/11. They developed a plan to capture him in early 1998, but it was surrounded with concerns from military leaders about relying on the leaders of the Islamic tribes.

After all the planes got hijacked, the south tower collapsed at 9:59 am, less than an hour after being hit. The north tower followed at 10:28. Later that day the 7-trade canter collapsed at 5:21 from fires that had been started when the northern tower collapsed. Before these towers collapsed, the Twin towers were at the top in the financial district for more than 30 years now.

After the attacks, everyone came together to help those who were affected by the attacks. A lot of people from all over the world had to help by giving blood to blood banks because they were overwhelmed. I took many volunteers, police officers, and firefighters to help clean up the big mess that this produced, and it shows how when something happens to our nation, we all come together as one to solve it and fix the problem.
