The Necessity of Rebellion Essay Example
Oftentimes rebellion is necessary. It’s normal for people to go against what they are supposed to believe because they believe differently and want change. In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand believes rebellion is an action needed when one opposed the rules and beliefs of a government and attempts to go against it. Ayn Rand describes her beliefs through Equality, a twenty-one year old man who lives in a world where people can't say “I”. Throughout the book he breaks the laws of his government to find the truths and mysteries of his world. He chooses to rebel against everything he knows to make his world better, but faces obstacles and consequences in doing so.
In Anthem, Ayn Rand describes how Equality rebels against his government by building a light bulb from the past. The author talks about how equality breaks away from the laws of his government by sneaking out every night to build the bulb. He does this because he believes the light bulb will make the future better. Equality wants his city to evolve instead of resisting from change. But the Scholars of his city were angered by this, and want to destroy the bulb. But no matter what they say, Equality continues doing what he thinks is right.
Ayn Rand talks about how Equality believes it is necessary to rebel because he now knows he has to make the future better. At the end of the story, Equality runs away from his city into the forest secretly followed by Liberty, the one he loves. In the forest, both Equality and Liberty come across a house like no other in the mountains. They both enter the house and look around. In the home Equality finds items that were from the past and most importantly a book that talks about the word “I”. Equality then decides to stay in the home with Liberty forever. He then plans to get others to follow him and create a new and better age.
Equality chooses to rebel against everything he knows to make his world better, but faces obstacles and consequences in doing so. Equality had to rebel against his government because it was wrong. He had to break the laws to at least try to make a better future for others and himself. He learned more about the past and the truths of his world because he knew there was more. In the story of Anthem, Ayn Rand believes it is necessary for rebellion in order for the great or good.
