Pro Euthanasia Essay Example
What would you do if someone you loved was in terrible pain and you knew they were not going to make it? “Euthanasia, is to provide a detailed account of particular person suffering a particular disease and asking: ‘how can we deny this person the active intervention of another to bring about death?’ or ‘what would you want if you were in this person’s shoes?” (Kamisar) This shows that euthanasia is used to stop pain and relieve suffering. “Active voluntary euthanasia (AVE) Has heard emotional stories about people suffering great pain and begging for someone to kill them or help them bring about their death” (Kamisar) this shows that when people are in terrible acts of pain it can sometimes be so unbearable that this wish death upon their self. “When the hemlock society was founded, ‘passive euthanasia’ was just becoming acceptable, i.e., letting patients die by refusal or removal of life support” (Girsh) this shows when the hemlock society was being found passive euthanasia was beginning to be acceptable. “Since 1984 the Dutch have permitted physician-assisted suicide under strict judicial guidelines although no law has been passed.” (Girsh) This shows that since 1984 Physician-assisted suicide has been permitted under strict judicial guidelines. Many people believe that euthanasia relieves suffering and many other people disagree saying it does not relieve pain and suffering and should be illegal but sometimes you should put yourself in the shoes of the other person, like if you are in unbearable pain and were slowly dying would you want to stay and suffer or have your pain relieved with a peaceful death? Also physician assisted suicide should be legal because most doctors know what is good for the patient and be allowed to give the patient a choice. Also euthanasia brings a slow painful death to an end. For these reasons euthanasia should be legal and always be a choice.
Many people think it is wrong for euthanasia to be used and is often called murder or suicide. This quote shows what many people say about euthanasia “Killing should remain a criminal act.” (Barry) this quote shows how many people feel like euthanasia is a criminal act. This next quote will show how people think of health professionals who give euthanasia as a choice. The next quote will explain how people think of giving euthanasia is encouraging someone to die. “Yablick Points to how easily health professionals can encourage someone to die” (Colbert) that quote showed how people think that doctors are encouraging people to do euthanasia when they are giving it as a choice. This will show how people think of euthanasia as suicide or killing instead of ending suffering. “However, an alternative definition, more in accord with contemporary usages, generally suggests something quite different: it indicates the bringing about death of human beings, either by suicide or killing, ostensibly to prevent extreme pain or mental anguish.” (Thornton) this quote shows how they look at it as murder or suicide. Those are some reasons why people disagree with the use of euthanasia.
One of many reasons why euthanasia should be legal is because it stops the pain and suffering for the slowly dying patient. The next quote will show how people think euthanasia shows hopelessness towards people causing the patient to feel hopeless. “If society were to legalize assisted suicide, it would send a very profound message that death is an acceptable solution to life’s trials and traumas. At a social level, it would elevate hopelessness and fatalism above the cultural affirmation of living, loving, fighting for another day, week, month or year” (O’Neil) this shows that people think that euthanasia makes people feel hopeless and ends up making people give up on everything and stop fighting. The next quote shows that people disagree and think that euthanasia is used to encourage someone to die. “A good society’s focus should be on the extension and improvement of human life, ensuring people have means and resources to live long, as healthily, as comfortable and as freely as possible. Such a society can also show compassion towards the extremely ill who want to die, but by turning away and allowing them to make their decisions, not by evaluating their predicament into some kind of national standard of when death is acceptable.” (O’Neil) That shows how people think toward to have option of euthanasia. This shows that people in this condition should be given the choice for euthanasia and not have to ask the bureaucrat for it. “Another suggestion is to have ‘assisted suicide tribunals’ at which the terminally ill could make their case of dying. Imagine a 92 year old woman on the cusp of death who wants to be hurried along, or a 45 year old man in the final days of terminal cancer who wants that extra shot of morphine, having to ask for permission from the bureaucrat.” That quote shows that some people agree with it but they don’t agree with the fact they have to ask the bureaucrat. Those reasons show that instead of relieving pain show compassion and let them slowly die.” (O’Neil) that showed how some people think it should be a choice and it should be the choice of the patient instead of having to ask the bureaucrat for it.
Doctors and loved ones should be able to assist suffering with euthanasia by giving the terminally ill loved one or patient the choice to end their suffering by giving them euthanasia to die peacefully and mercifully instead of slowly dying and suffering from their pain. “Over 90% of people with terminal illness will endure their situation, but between 5-10% find it intolerable and request euthanasia. A minority of those with a hopeless illness also suffer intractable symptoms and request euthanasia.” (Snyder) This quote shows that 5-10% of people are suffering so bad that they request euthanasia to stop the pain. This will show that pain is not always controlled by palliative medicines so many people are left suffering from not having any medicine that works for their injury or illness. “Pain is not always adequately controlled by palliative medicines, 5-10% of cancer pain may be this type and in some cases can only be “palliated” by producing a prolonged unconsciousness, coma or “Pharmacological oblivion”. This may last days until death occurs by dehydration and circulatory collapse or retention of bronchial secretions (‘The death rattle’) Pneumonia and pulmonary” This shows sometimes people are in so much pain their body shuts down and this ends up putting them in a coma till they slowly die. This will show how some people agree with it and don’t see it as killing or assisted suicide but instead see it as bringing suffering to an end.“Why should the latter be perceived as doing harm when the former is not? Rather than characterizing this as ‘killing’, we should see it as bringing the dying process to a merciful end.” (Rogatz) That quote shows that some people agree that it should be seen as helping the dying person out instead of saying it is killing them. Therefore doctors and loved ones should have a choice to help out the patient if they truly need it.
And finally the last reason why it should be legal is because if doctors know you are slowly dying they should give you a choice. This quote will show how some patients lose dignity and that causes them to have a state of unrelieved misery and desire. “There is growing awareness that loss of dignity and of those attributes that we associate particularly with being human are the factors that most commonly reduce patients to a state of unrelieved misery and desire” (Rogatz) this quote shows that people slowly lose dignity when they have a state of unrelieved misery and desire. This will show how some patients feel about euthanasia when in terrible unbearable pain. “Why should the latter be perceived as doing harm when the former is not? Rather than characterizing this as ‘killing’, we should see it as bringing the dying process to a merciful end.” (Rogatz) this quote shows that people think it is killing when really it’s relieving pain and suffering. Over 90% of people with terminal illness will endure their situation, but between 5-10% find it intolerable and request euthanasia. A minority of those with a hopeless illness also suffer intractable symptoms and request euthanasia.” (Snyder) this quote shows that some people will be so badly in pain they request a peaceful and merciful death. There is some reasons why euthanasia should be legal.
Even though people disagree that euthanasia should be used. It should always be a choice. Because euthanasia relieves unbearable pain and assisted suicide by physicians should be legal and euthanasia relieves suffering. If we don’t have euthanasia as a choice, this will lead to people slowly dying and suffering instead of relieving pain. That is why euthanasia should be a choice to the terminally ill and patients with unbearable pain.
